Ball-type brooch Metal -- Silver L 15.1; Diam. 5.9 HCA 508 Personal ornament |
| A silver brooch in a thistle pattern. This is an example of a ball-type penannular brooch, which would have functioned as a dress or cloak fastener. The brooch has a silver penannular ring and has two solid globular terminals with criss-cross brambled decoration (hence the term thistle brooch) and terminals with the decorated ring ends extending beyond them. The pin is fitted into a thistle head with an expanded vertical terminal. The upper shank of the pin is rounded but the lower section is square, ending in a point. It has been suggested that this brooch is a nineteenth-century reproduction. However, the details of its manufacture and the slightly misshapen state of the pin do not support such speculation. |

Handpin Metal -- Copper alloy, Glass -- Enamel L 16.75 HCA 533 Personal ornament |
| This type of dress pin is known as a handpin, its head resembling the palm of the hand with the fingers bent forward. The earliest handpins are of silver and are of relatively modest size. Examples in copper alloy, with elaborately decorated heads and exceptionally long pins, were made in Ireland into the sixth century. Most developed handpins have five fingers rather than three as here. In this example the head is a semi-circular plate with a circular perforation. It is capped by three projecting fingers and is fixed to a right-angled projection at the top of the shank. The head is decorated with a pattern of reserved metal against a background of red enamel. The design consists of a pair of inward-curving dodo heads springing from a central inverted U-shape. Found at Askeaton, Co. Limerick. |
