Horse aquamanile Metal -- Copper alloy -- Brass (cast) H 27.5 x L 26 x W 8 CG 073 Container |
||
| The Latin term aquamanile is conventionally applied to vessels from which water was poured for hand-washing in both domestic and liturgical contexts; it referred originally to the basin into which water was poured. This horse aquamanile is relatively naturalistic, although a small dragon forms the handle and holds the reins. Water was poured in through a lidded opening in the head; it was tapped at the breast through a beast-head spout that could be closed by a quarter turn. The handle and reins were made separately and attached by soldering, likewise the spigot that holds the spout. Aquamaniles of this type and quality were produced for wealthy patrons in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. |

Bronze Age Shield/ The Antrim Shield Metal -- Copper alloy -- Bronze Diam. 65 HCA 457 Arms / armour |
||
| This circular shield is made of very thin sheet-bronze, evenly beaten to a thickness of less than 1 mm. It is skilfully and symmetrically decorated with 11 concentric repoussé ribs and 11 rows of low hemispherical bosses. A large, hollow central boss is stepped and of a rounded conical shape. Two neat circular perforations, replacing bosses in one row, held the rivets for suspension tabs, now missing. A central handle, on the back, is a stout C-sectioned strip of bronze, held in place by two rivets with heads indistinguishable from the decorative bosses. Six tears or holes represent damage from the rear; one irregular perforation represents damage from the front and it is unclear what might have caused this. Yetholm type.
The find spot of the shield is unknown but it may have come from County Antrim. |

Ballyscullion Cauldron Metal -- Copper alloy -- Bronze H 57; Diam. 57 HCA 458 Container; Culinary equipment |
||
| The body and rim of this cauldron are made from eight pieces of beaten bronze, each hammered to a thickness of about 1mm and riveted together. The horizontal rows of conical-headed rivets on the exterior are both functional and decorative. The handles are each made of four pieces of bronze: a cast circular ring of complex ribbed cross-section, a sheet-bronze ribbed and flanged U-shaped tube and two other sheet-bronze half-tubes riveted to the rim edges. The rim was strengthened by the attachment of eight vertical slender bronze stays riveted to the body exterior. All but one of these stays are broken. The interior of the base displays many small, irregular indentations, as if hit repeatedly by a hard object.
This cauldron was found in 1880 in Ballyscullion, County Antrim. |

| This bucket is Irish, and dates from early in the last millennium BC. It is made of riveted sheet-bronze with a tub-shaped lower piece, its concave base protected by a wheel-shaped base-plate. The upper portion is made of two sheets of bronze riveted together with flat-headed rivets. The neck is vertical with a rolled rim. The bucket has been much repaired on both base and body. The handles are lozenge-sectioned circular rings, which ride freely in ribbed staples (which may be replacements) riveted to the neck. A distinctive feature is the repoussé decoration on the upper body, a horizontal band of rows of low bosses on the shoulder with filled pendant triangles below. This bucket was found in Capecastle Bog, near Armoy, Co. Antrim. |

Ball-type brooch Metal -- Silver L 15.1; Diam. 5.9 HCA 508 Personal ornament |
||
| A silver brooch in a thistle pattern. This is an example of a ball-type penannular brooch, which would have functioned as a dress or cloak fastener. The brooch has a silver penannular ring and has two solid globular terminals with criss-cross brambled decoration (hence the term thistle brooch) and terminals with the decorated ring ends extending beyond them. The pin is fitted into a thistle head with an expanded vertical terminal. The upper shank of the pin is rounded but the lower section is square, ending in a point. It has been suggested that this brooch is a nineteenth-century reproduction. However, the details of its manufacture and the slightly misshapen state of the pin do not support such speculation. |

Handpin Metal -- Copper alloy, Glass -- Enamel L 16.75 HCA 533 Personal ornament |
||
| This type of dress pin is known as a handpin, its head resembling the palm of the hand with the fingers bent forward. The earliest handpins are of silver and are of relatively modest size. Examples in copper alloy, with elaborately decorated heads and exceptionally long pins, were made in Ireland into the sixth century. Most developed handpins have five fingers rather than three as here. In this example the head is a semi-circular plate with a circular perforation. It is capped by three projecting fingers and is fixed to a right-angled projection at the top of the shank. The head is decorated with a pattern of reserved metal against a background of red enamel. The design consists of a pair of inward-curving dodo heads springing from a central inverted U-shape. Found at Askeaton, Co. Limerick. |

The Antrim Cross Metal -- Copper alloy -- Bronze (cast), Glass -- Enamel H 16.8 x W 16.4 HCA 627 Religious / ritual equipment |
||
| The Antrim Cross is a bronze cross with five equal arms. The cross has five pyramidal bosses each in the form of a truncated pyramid. The side of the pyramids are decorated with interlocking angular fields of yellow enamel, alternating with a similar-coloured design of an arrow within a truncated triangle. The pyramidal boss at the centre is taller and has angular enamelled panels on two of its four sides. The other two sides, back to back, differ in that they are decorated with an animal design, once fully enamelled between its raised outlines. The flat tops of the bosses are decorated with small squares of millefiori enamel. Rivet-holes in the separately cast base-plate show that this cross was attached to a flat surface, perhaps that of a house-shaped reliquary.
The cross was found in County Antrim. |
