Gyldensteen Cross Ivory -- Walrus ivory, Hydrocarbon -- Jet H 7.2 x W 5.7 BM 001 Religious / ritual equipment |
| This 12th century reliquary cross is made in two pieces, which, when put together, form a box in the shape of a crucifix, perhaps to contain a relic of the true cross. It is made of walrus ivory. The front depicts the figure of Christ on the cross under the hand of God. The foot of Christ foot overhangs the frame and the finely carved loin-cloth falls below the knee. The eyes are inlaid with either jet or paste. The reverse shows the Agnus Dei within a quatrefoil surrounded by the symbols of the Four Evangelists. |

Beverley Crozier Ivory -- Walrus ivory H 9.8 x W 6.4 (volute) BM 002 Religious / ritual equipment |
| This crozier head is made of walrus ivory. It is carved in relief with inhabited foliated scrolls, mainly animals and birds, on the upright. The volute has three dimensional scenes, carved within it, on either side. One side shows two standing figures and one seated figure with the central figure touching the mouth of the seated figure. This is thought to refer to St John of Beverley (d. 721), Bishop of Hexham, curing a dumb boy. The reverse scene may relate to the Harrowing of Hell. The outer edge of the volute bears two incised inscriptions but they are indecipherable. |

Love Pair Pendant Ivory, Metal -- Gold, Mineral -- Beryl -- Emerald, Mineral -- Corundum -- Ruby, Glass -- Enamel, Animal -- Animal product -- Pearl H 11 x W 6 x D 0.5 T 001 Personal ornament |
| This pendant consists of an ivory carving of a nymph and satyr in an amorous embrace, supported by an ornate crescent-shaped gold mount, decorated with enamelled scrolls, three emeralds, one ruby, three large drop pearls and two smaller round ones. The ivory shows traces of paint: yellow on the hair of the nymph, blue on the cloak and green on the ground surface. The pendant hangs from two separate chains, each of 20 round links, joined at the top by an enamelled scroll motif with tiny blue stones, a central cabochon ruby and pendant pearl. The back has engraved motifs coloured in green, blue and amber. The ivory may be a later addition to an otherwise sixteenth-century base. It would have been worn either as a neck pendant or sewn high on a sleeve. |
