Gyldensteen Cross Ivory -- Walrus ivory, Hydrocarbon -- Jet H 7.2 x W 5.7 BM 001 Religious / ritual equipment |
| This 12th century reliquary cross is made in two pieces, which, when put together, form a box in the shape of a crucifix, perhaps to contain a relic of the true cross. It is made of walrus ivory. The front depicts the figure of Christ on the cross under the hand of God. The foot of Christ foot overhangs the frame and the finely carved loin-cloth falls below the knee. The eyes are inlaid with either jet or paste. The reverse shows the Agnus Dei within a quatrefoil surrounded by the symbols of the Four Evangelists. |

Beverley Crozier Ivory -- Walrus ivory H 9.8 x W 6.4 (volute) BM 002 Religious / ritual equipment |
| This crozier head is made of walrus ivory. It is carved in relief with inhabited foliated scrolls, mainly animals and birds, on the upright. The volute has three dimensional scenes, carved within it, on either side. One side shows two standing figures and one seated figure with the central figure touching the mouth of the seated figure. This is thought to refer to St John of Beverley (d. 721), Bishop of Hexham, curing a dumb boy. The reverse scene may relate to the Harrowing of Hell. The outer edge of the volute bears two incised inscriptions but they are indecipherable. |

Horse aquamanile Metal -- Copper alloy -- Brass (cast) H 27.5 x L 26 x W 8 CG 073 Container |
| The Latin term aquamanile is conventionally applied to vessels from which water was poured for hand-washing in both domestic and liturgical contexts; it referred originally to the basin into which water was poured. This horse aquamanile is relatively naturalistic, although a small dragon forms the handle and holds the reins. Water was poured in through a lidded opening in the head; it was tapped at the breast through a beast-head spout that could be closed by a quarter turn. The handle and reins were made separately and attached by soldering, likewise the spigot that holds the spout. Aquamaniles of this type and quality were produced for wealthy patrons in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. |
