Guide to Fields in the Database

The contents of the Hunt Museum's Catalogue database is organized online into the following fields:

Registration Number
This number consists of two to three alphabetic characters followed by a space and up to three digits. A second number following a decimal point or forward slash (/) indicates that the object is one of either a group or that the item is a multiple-component object which has parts documented individually.

Artist/Creator/Maker
The name of the artist/creator/maker in 'first name' 'surname' order, with year of birth and death if known. If an attribution is made then 'attrib.' is added in parenthesis. A work emanating from a workshop is noted as such. The term 'circle of' denotes a group of artists working in a similar style. The description 'after' implies in 'the style of'.

Object Name
This field has been edited using the British Museum Object Names Thesaurus. At present only the Top Term, as appropriate, has been inserted in this field. On further examination of objects, the terms used may be subject to change.

Hunt Museum Title
The title of the work as designated by the artist/creator/maker and/or the Hunt Museum.

Filename
This is the name of the image file and in this online Catalogue appears as the digital image itself.

Dimensions
This field contains measurements of objects in centimetres. The following conventions are used:
L Length; H Height; D Depth; W Width; Diam. Diameter; (ext.) external dimension; (int.) internal dimension; (max.) maximum dimension; (min.) minimum dimension; (overall) indicates overall measurement, e.g. L (overall) 5; (at top), (at base) etc. refers to the dimension at that point.
Weight, if any given, is given in grammes.

Materials
This field has been edited using the British Museum Material Thesaurus. The editing of this field is not fully complete as some objects need further examination to assess their material content.

Brief Description
This field is a narrative description of the object with any information that research so far has provided.
