|||
| Known Date(s): 31 August 1952-31 December 1959 (-20 December 1965) Description: File of letters from Robert Vereker, 7th Viscount Gort, Hamsterley Hall, Rowlands Gill, Newcastle-on-Tyne, to John Hunt, Senior, and Gertrude Hunt. Letters relate to the purchase by Lord Gort of Lough Cutra Castle, Gort, county Galway, the ancestral home of the Gort family, and Bunratty Castle, county Clare. The majority of the letters pertain to Bunratty Castle. John Hunt, Senior, assisted Gort in the project to restore this castle. Several letters relate to the purchase of Lough Cutra Castle. Includes letter to Gertrude Hunt (29 September 1952), in which Lord Gort writes that Major Gough, the present owner, has told him that Lough Cutra is sold. He does not know whether Gough is trying to bluff him. He did not plan to live there anyway but to let it to his cousin, Colin Vereker, the next Lord Gort. Major Gough has told him that there is £10,000 worth of timber there, young trees coming on and some seventy acres of grassland. Asks Gertrude Hunt to go and see the house; in letter (23 November 1952), written to Gertrude Hunt at about the time he secured Lough Cutra Castle, Lord Gort writes about his delight in returning to Gort for the first time. His family had left the area 103 years before; in letter (16 December 1952) to Gertrude Hunt, Lord Gort wonders if Major Gough wanted him to get the property. Also writes that he plans to sell some of the timber on the land and this will cancel out some of what he spent acquiring it; in letter (22 December 1952), to Gertrude Hunt, Lord Gort notes that her has had a letter from A.J. Sexton, auctioneer, 64 O Connell Street, Limerick, telling him that Bunratty Castle can be got for £1,000. Lord Gort writes that he is beginning to wonder how it can be done; in later letter to John Hunt, Senior, outlines how Bunratty Castle was acquired from its present owner, Commander R.H. Russell. Russell was a descendant of the Studdert who got the property from Lord [ ]field after Lord Thomond gave it up. Russell is now selling the castle for a low price on the understanding that it will be restored. Russell could not afford to do this work himself. The letters pertaining to the restoration of Bunratty Castle are detailed and outline Lord Gorts ideas and feelings about the project. In general, the letters discuss in great detail both construction work throughout the castle and the fixtures and fittings, including furniture and antiques inserted therein. Also treated of is the financing of the restoration project. A person frequently mentioned is Percy le Clerc, Inspector of National Monuments, Office of Public Works, Ireland. Includes letter (16 January 1953) in which Lord Gort suggests to Gertrude Hunt that Bunratty Castle be re-roofed with timber from the Lough Cutra estate. Also, that there will be lots of first-class slates to spare at Lough Cutra. Much attention is given in Lord Gorts letters to the acquisition of timber suitable for the restoration of the castle, usually oak, but there are also references to chestnut and beech. Lord Gorts letters suggest that much timber was imported from Britain. There are many references to having timber sawn in Britain, transported by truck to Liverpool and shipped from there to Ireland. In letter (17 December 1956), Lord Gort informs John Hunt, Senior, that he has arranged the purchase from the executors of ‘Lord Ninian Stewart [of] 90 acres of cut off timber land adjoining our park for £700.’ In several letters, writes of a neighbour who is afraid that chestnut trees in the vicinity of his house will fall on it (23 February 1957). There are also many references in Lord Gorts letters to furniture and other antiques to be placed in Bunratty Castle. However, such objects are often described rather vaguely and many of the objects would probably only be identifiable with reference to other sources of information about them. Lord Gorts letters mention several people, whom it seems, were involved in the art and antiques trade, and from whom he acquired objects for Bunratty Castle or perhaps, who conserved items for him. They are Bert Crowther, ‘Baer’ and ‘Vengraf.’ Letter (6 December 1956) to Gertrude Hunt suggests that both the Hunts and Lord Gort himself have been collecting objects for furnishing the castle. It is evident that Lord Gort has had some objects in his possession for some time and in another letter (15 May 1956) he writes that he will take back some of his objects, deposited at Bowes museum. Some of these objects may have come to Bunratty Castle or been sold to raise funds, probably at Sothebys, as there are several references to this firm. He also refers (30 August 1953) to purchasing objects in Montreal to be placed in the castle. Letters sometimes refer to the closure of houses in Britain and the acquisition of fixtures and fittings from them for Bunratty Castle. In letter (4 February 1954), writes of importing into Ireland a marble floor for Bunratty Castle. It is from Stella Hall, Blaydon, county Durham. It has been suggested to him that it is some sort of marble known in southern Germany. Several letters over time discuss Lord Gorts hope of acquiring more land around the castle. In letter (3 February 1955), he states he would like 200 acres to ‘justify the castle for any future owner’; in later letter (18 June 1958) writes to John Hunt, Senior, that Sexton is getting him an option for six acres on Russells land. Writes that he held back when the Tourist Board (Bord Fáilte Éireann) were buying it but now thinks it better that he should hold it. Several letters (27 July 1958) discuss the operating agreement for the castle. Lord Gort writes that he told Bord Fáilte Éireann (the Irish Tourist Board) that he would definitely schedule the furniture (that is, sign it over to a trust) and give them the takings made in the first five years. In several letters, for example, in one written to John Hunt, Senior, (c. July 1957) writes that he hopes Bunratty Castle will be used as a location for films. Bunratty Castle is the subject that receives most attention in Lord Gorts letters to John Hunt, Senior, and Gertrude Hunt. However, other subjects are also treated of. For instance, there are frequent references to Lord Gorts business interests in Winnipeg, Canada. Also there are references to family matters. In letter (22 October 1952) to John Hunt, Senior, Gort describes unnamed person who is heir and solicitor to Lady Gort and a trustee of Bunratty castle, ‘The fiend (not my friend) who lives here told me today that when the revolution comes he will have great pleasure in putting me in the gas oven. I told him I knew that & he said he was my wifes [sic] guest not mine so I said I fully agreed with him there.' There are also references (21 June 1957) to a conflict with his cousin Colin Vereker, who later became 8th Viscount Gort and who lived for a time at Lough Cutra. Lord Gort frequently makes references to political issues topical during the 1950s and frequently alludes to Winston Churchill, for example, in letter (30 August 1933), he writes to Gertrude Hunt, 'I hear the same stories about how England will always rise again & how Churchill saved England from the terrible Huns. I hardly want to go into the Northern Counties Club. They know my views only too well… My lawyer and agent there [Winnipeg] are getting a bit old 78 about & then you only look back. Winston is that age & he is only looking forward to making a settlement with the Russians so as to try & stop the bottom falling out of his career. It is going to fall out all right as the mistakes are coming obvious. I rather think this country is going more to the right.’ In another letter (22 July 1953), Lord Gort writes that he is a communist. Size: 170 items |

The schedule does not include conservation works to be carried out by the Office of Public Works at state expense. Estimates are only approximate at this time. Walford, solicitor, 27 Bolton Street, Piccadilly, London, solicitor for Lord Gort, to John Hunt, Senior, Drumleck, Baily, county Dublin. Includes letter (29 July 1958) in which Walford writes that it is very sad that there has to be a break in work at Bunratty Castle, county Clare, but that at the moment it looks inevitable; in another letter (21 December 1959), Walford states that he is sorry that Hunt has experienced further delay about his lease [probably for a flat in Bunratty Castle]. Explains that Lord Gort put Bunratty Castle, county Clare, into a settlement for Lady Gort for her life and after her death for Lady De L Isle, daughter of the 6th Viscount Gort. Walford writes that Lord De L Isle is meticulous about legal documents and outlines details of two terms and conditions he wishes added to Hunts lease. Walford asks if Hunt will agree to these terms; in a final letter (1 April 1960), Walford writes that the Commissioners of Public Works in Ireland have written to him enquiring about Hunts curatorship of Bunratty Castle. Walford encloses a copy of his reply [1 March 1960] to the Commissioners which states that he understands that the curatorship is a matter for the Irish Tourist Board or possibly the Shannon Airport Authority. | Known Date(s): 13 December 1957 Description: Statement written by P.J. Hartnett, Technical Manager, Bord Fáilte Éireann (Irish Tourist Board). Treats of a meeting he had with John Hunt, Senior, and Gordon Clark, Bord Fáilte Éireann, on 11 December 1957. Hunt produced figures showing itemised expenditure at Bunratty Castle, county Clare, up to 5 December 1957. Hartnett notes that the sum of £12,000 estimated in 1951 [for the restoration] and subscribed to in equal parts by Bord Fáilte Éireann, Lord Gort and the Office of Public Works, has now been exceeded by £6,000 and a further £6,000 will be needed to complete the project. Notes that saving would be made as Hunt agreed to subvent the cost of the curators flat where he will live. However, this saving will be expended on account of the necessity of purchasing 30 acres around the castle to 'forestall undesirable commercial exploitation if and when Bunratty is developed as a tourist attraction.' Notes also discuss the future financing of the project. Size: 2pp |

Queries if the Office of Public Works should be responsible for all the costs for which it has been made responsible. Also, that prior to considering any further request for grants for Bunratty Castle, the Bord requires that a firm and final costing with specifications and completion date be furnished and that an assurance be forthcoming that sufficient funds will be available for completion of the project. Russell to Lord Gort and proposed lease of portion of the castle to John Hunt, Senior. Includes copy of letter (3 March 1958) from R.H. Russell, Bunratty Castle, Cratloe, county Clare, to Messrs A.J. Sexton & Sons, auctioneers, O Connell Street, Limerick, discussing area around Bunratty Castle which he proposes to sell: ‘It would comprise about 16 (s) acres and include the site of the original Castle, the old Castle walled garden, the Spruce grove to the East of the Castle, the Creamery and enclosure and the double-house now tenanted by Mrs. Higgins and in use as a Post Office and its enclosure. All en bloc for £2,000.’ Mentions that the area previously offered through John Hunt, Senior, was larger but did not include the post office area. Also, that a water supply must be arranged for Russell; letter [6 May 1958] from John Hunt, Senior, to ‘Dear Sirs.’ Writes with reference to their letter of 6 January 1959. Hunt notes that Lough Cutra estates sold their interest in Bunratty Castle some considerable time ago, perhaps more than two years ago. The castle [Bunratty] is now vested in three trustees who are Hunt himself, Lady Gort and Desmond O Malley, solicitor, Limerick. The trustees have arranged a managerial agreement with Shannon airport authority to act as agents and managers of the castle. They have appointed Hunt as director and curator; letter (27 February 1959) from Joe O Malley, from Desmond J. O Malley solicitors, 10 Glentworth Street, Limerick, to John Hunt, Senior, that G.H. Walford, solicitor for Lord Gort, has written that it is proposed that Hunt take a portion of Bunratty Castle for his own occupation. Walford suggests that Hunt gets a fourteen-year lease at nominal rent of £1. Also mentions that it is probable that the Commissioners of Public Works would object to anyone but a caretaker residing in the castle. Size: 9 items |

| Known Date(s): 18 August 1958-1 September 1958 Description: File of letters written by Gordon Clark, Technical Department, Bord Fáilte Éireann (Irish Tourist Board), Mount Street Crescent, Dublin, to John Hunt, Senior, Drumleck, Baily, county Dublin. With one letter (18 August 1958) encloses copy of letter (19 August 1958) he sent to Lord Gort, Hamsterley Hall, Rowlands Gill, Newcastle-on-Tyne. In letter to Lord Gort, Clark writes of matters relating to the financing of the restoration of Bunratty Castle, county Clare. Also, they are of the opinion that the operation of the castle as a tourist attraction should be the subject of an agency agreement between the present trustees and Shannon Airport Development Authority. Further investment of Bord Fáilte Éireann funds is subject to satisfactory agreement. Clark also proposes that the ownership of the contents of the castle should be vested in trustees representative of the trustees of the castle, Bord Fáilte Éireann and a national institution. They are anxious that the project should be completed but there are difficulties caused by the fact that the cost of the project has doubled. It would be better if some private sources of investment were found, so as not to place the entire burden on public funds. In a second letter to Hunt (1 September 1958), Clark writes that Bord Fáilte Éireann is willing to give £6,100 towards the completion of the project upon named conditions. Size: 2 items |

In relation to the promotion of Bunratty Castle, county Clare, as a tourist attraction, writes that the most practical way is for the trustees of the castle and the Shannon Airport Development Authority to execute an agency agreement. In relation to this writes, ‘The suggestion envisages that, in return for the Airport Authority undertaking responsibility for all outgoings on the Castle for a stated period (10 years suggests itself), the Authority would receive the proceeds for the first five years and apportion these by agreement with Lord Gort for the second five years.’ Size: 2pp |

| Known Date(s): 4 November 1958 Description: Draft letter from John Hunt, Senior, Drumleck, Baily, county Dublin, to Brendan O Regan, [Chairman, Shannon Airport Authority]. Writes that he is anxious to know the position with regard to a financial settlement between Shannon Airport Authority and Bunratty Castle, county Clare, as until this happens, Bord Fáilte Éireann (Irish Tourist Board) will not make funds, already voted, available. Hunt has suggested that the admission fee to Bunratty Castle should be half a crown and that this should be sufficient to cover outgoings. Outlines what these outgoings would be, for instance, caretaker and wife, insurance, rates, Hunts own travel expenses etc. Size: 2pp |
